Climate • Mild climate • Chesapeake Bay: Body of water that supplies Middle Atlantic States with many varieties of fish and shellfish • Perfect environment for farms
New York • First settlers in NY were Dutch • Known as the Empire State due to wealth and variety of resources • Excellent bakers: introduced doughnuts, cookies, molasses cakes and gingerbread. • The region eventually became home to many immigrants including the Italians, Asians, Jews and Irish. • Known as “The Melting Pot” • Grows much of the nation’s apple crop and has a large dairy industry, famous for cheddar cheese
New York • Common foods: Buffalo Chicken Wings, Waldorf Salad, New York Cheesecake, Rye Bread, Bagels, Pizza
New Jersey • Known as the Garden State because NJ grows a lot of fruits and vegetables • Examples: corn
Delaware/Maryland • Both states are known for their seafood from coastal waters and bays. • Maryland crab cakes are a famous dish • Delaware is known as the “First State” because it was the first state to ratify the Constitution
Pennsylvania • Haven for religious people • The Germans came in 1682 and were known as the Pennsylvania Dutch. • They were superstitious people and believed that serving seven sweets and seven sours at a meal would ward off evil spirits • Ex: relishes, coleslaw, pickles, jellies, apple butter, cakes, pies, sauerbraten (pot roast), sauerkraut (pickled cabbage).
Pennsylvania • These settlers were farmers • Ate hearty, heavy meals and wasted no part of an animal or plant • Example: pigs feet, scrapple (pork scraps and cornmeal), tongue • Baked Goods were an important part of their diet. • Examples: shoofly pie, sticky buns, funnel cakes
