When they both were together they had Midas judge who was the better musician. When Midas judged Pan the winner, Apollo was not having it and cursed Midas with the ears of an Ass for the rest of his life. He tried to keep his ears hidden by wearing large hats and helmets. Midas’ barber was the only one to know the king’s secret. One day the barber went to the top of a mountain and yelled out, “The king has ass’ ears. ” Not knowing he had dug into an echo, the barber spread the king’s secret across the land King Midas lived in shame. Modern Day: There are not any real examples of having an Ass’ ears in modern day life.

Midas wished for everything that he touched would turn to gold, but that wish backfired on him. He wasn’t able to eat because once he grabbed the food it turned to Gold, could never find love because any physical touch would turn them to gold. He begged Dionysus to reverse his curse, he instructed King Midas to wash his hands in River Pactolus to get rid of the Golden Touch. In the histories book Herodotus mentions Midas, saying that the King of Lydia, Gyges was the first non-greek to dedicate offerings of silver and gold since King Midas. MODERN: The modern day phrase “The Midas Touch” comes from the King Midas myth and is used to say that someone has good fortune or the ability to make money out of anything.
