Microscope Parts and functions What do microscopes do Slides: 26 Download presentation Microscope Parts and functions What do microscopes do? • Enlarge the view of an object/specimen so we are able to observe the details Compound Light Microscope • more than 1 lens Compound Light Microscope • Light projected upward to see the specimen Eyepiece / Ocular Lens • lens you look through • lens closest to your eye Eyepiece / Ocular Lens agnifies the image 10 X Objective Lenses • Closest to the slide / specimen • 3 objectives on your scope Objective Lenses • Scanning lens: Red (4 X), shortest • Low power lens : Yellow (10 X), = • High power lens: Blue (40 X), longest Scanning Objective Lens • magnifies 4 X • shortest lens • largest field of view • Red Low Power Objective Lens • Magnifies 10 X • Medium length • Yellow High Power Objective Lens • magnifies 40 X • longest lens • Smallest field of view • Blue Coarse Adjustment Knob • Moves stage the most, rapidly • ONLY used to focus with scanning or low power • A. k. a. ”coarse focus” Coarse Adjustment Knob • NEVER use coarse focus with high power!!!!! Fine Adjustment Knob • moves stage very slowly • used for fine focusing • May be used with all lenses. Fine Adjustment Knob • The only knob used when on high power • A. k. a. “fine focus” Stage • where all the action takes place • where slide rests Stage Clips –hold slide in place Revolving Nosepiece • rotates to change objective lenses • be sure lens “clicks” into position Body Tube • connects eyepiece + revolving nosepiece (objective lenses) Body Tube holds lenses the right distance apart Arm • used to carry scope • holds body tube + lenses in place over stage • Supports the scope • Used to carry the scope Base Diaphragm • regulates how much light passes through the slide and into the scope Field of View How much of an object/specimen you are able to see through the microscope CALCULATING TOTAL MAGNIFICATION: Eyepiece magnification x Objective magnification = TOTAL MAGNIFICATION What do I do if my view is dark? 1. Check the plug/light switch! 2. Check the nosepiece! 3. Check the diaphragm!
