PART FUNCTION OCULAR/ EYEPIECE It is where one views enlarged object. (10 x, 15 x) the BARREL It is where the ocular/eyepiece is located and connects it to the body tube. BODY TUBE It connects the eyepiece and the revolving nosepiece. ARM Supports the lenses, body tube, and mirror. It is the part that should be held by one hand when carrying a microscope.

PART FUNCTION REVOLVING NOSEPIECE Holds the objectives and protects it from dusts. OBJECTIVES Magnifies the specimen being observed. There can be two to four objectives in one microscope. HIGH POWER OBJECTIVE (HPO) LOW POWER OBJECTIVE (LPO) Can magnify from 40 x to 100 x. Usually the longest objective. (blue or white stripe) Can magnify 10 x. Shorter than HPO. (yellow stripe)

PART FUNCTION OIL IMMERSION Can magnify 4 x. OBJECTIVE Usually the shortest objective. (OIO)

PART FUNCTION OIL IMMERSION Can magnify 4 x. OBJECTIVE Usually the shortest objective. (OIO) Uses specialized oil. (red stripe) DIAPHRAGM Regulates the passage of light through the stage. STAGE A platform that holds the slide that allows light to pass through the specimen. MIRROR Reflects light coming from the light source that passes through the specimen going to the

COARSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB Moves the body tube up and down. Used to view a specimen when using the LPO. FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB Used to make small focus adjustment when using the HPO.

FOCUSING THE MICROSCOPE First, find the light source by adjusting the mirror. Align the objective with the hole on the stage and eyepiece. You should hear a ‘tick’ sound when it is aligned properly. While peeking through the eyepiece, slowly turn the coarse adjustment knob to move the body tube downward. If you have seen the specimen, urn the HPO to adjust the focus.
