DRUG COMPARISIONS • Scenario: – A 49 yr/old male presents in the ER with chest pain that has been occurring over the past 48 hours. The patient’s history includes coronary artery disease, gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), asthma, and hypertension. – His current medications include Advair Diskus 1 inhalation twice daily, albuterol PRN, aspirin 325 mg daily, Plavix 75 mg daily, Prilosec 20 mg daily, and Singulair 10 mg daily. The nurse determines that the patient is 14 days postop from a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). – The patient is negative for an acute MI, but the physician has also ordered a CBC with differential, bleeding time, and hepatic function panel to rule out potential bleeding due to concomitant anticoagulant therapy. – The nurse wants to check monitoring parameters for Plavix and Prilosec, and potential drug-drug interactions for all of the patient’s medications.
