Microbiology • The area of science that studies microorganisms (microscopic) such as: – Viruses; – Bacteria; – Protists; – Parasites; – Fungi
Unicellular • Single-celled organisms that can only be seen through a microscope. • Bacteria – unicellular and prokaryotic. • Some protists and fungi are unicellular, but eukaryotic.
Virus • The smallest of the microbes. • Considered non-living because they can not reproduce on their own. – Must infect a living organism, called the host. The “host cell” makes copies of the virus, then it’s released to infect more cells.
Viral Reproduction Lytic Reproduction • Virus uses the host cell to make more copies of itself. • It causes the host cell to burst from so many copies. • Analogy: water balloon bursting
Viral Reproduction Lysogenic Reproduction • The virus uses the host cell to copy its DNA and then inserts that DNA into future viruses.
Bacteria • Smallest living organisms on earth. • They can be found almost anywhere: – Air, Soil, Water, Human Body.
Morphology • Morphology – means shapes and structures. • Bacteria have 3 basic morphologies: – Sphere – Rod – Spiral
Reproduction Potential • Bacteria multiply very rapidly with ideal conditions. • Millions of the same type of bacteria located in the same place are called: colonies. – They come from a single bacteria multiplying. • Graph:
Fungi • Reproduce by using spores. • Decomposer – gains food by breaking it down and absorbing it.
Protists Algae • Plant-like protists. • Multicellular. Protozoa • Animal-like protists.
