What is Teaching?

q. Teaching is not passing information to the students. q. Teaching is not sharing one’s own experience.

Ø The best approach to understanding the nature of teaching is establishing a harmonious relationship between teacher, student and subject. Ø Teaching is the activity of facilitating learning.

Ø Effectiveness in teaching does not relate to teacher’s age, sex, and teaching experience. Ø TEACHING is an ART

Defects in Teaching • • • More Teacher’s talk Only memory level More information & less explanation: Less chance of encouragement No planning

What is Learning? • Change in behavior brought about by activity, training or experiences. • Learning never ends. • Anyone who stops learning is old.

How learning happens? • Learning happens and knowledge is generated in an environment where interaction between teachers, students and content takes place in interactive ways.

How learning happens? We remember. . ü 20% of what we hear; ü 30% of what we see; ü 50% of what we see and hear; ü 90% of what we see, hear & do.

How are we teaching? • Observation • Trial and error

“TO ERR IS HUMAN; TO ADMIT ERROR IS SUPERHUMAN”

Microteaching • Dr. Allen and his group evolved innovative technique of teacher’s education -Microteaching in 1963 in America. • It is NOT AT ALL a teaching method. • It is a skill training technique.

Aim Microteaching is called so as it is like putting the teacher under a microscope

Methodology • A short lesson is taught by the trainee teachers to a group of four to six pupils or his peers for a period of five to ten minutes. • The emphasis is HOW TO TEACH than what to teach. • The main idea is to get a feedback on the skills practiced.

Methodology Step- I day) Step-III Step-IV Step-VI : Micro Lesson Plan : : : ( may take 2 hours / a Teach Feedback Session Re-plan Re-teach Another group Re-feedback

Characteristics of Microteaching • • The duration of teaching as well as number of students are less. The content is divided into smaller units which makes the teaching easier. Only one teaching skill is considered at a time. There is a provision of immediate feedback. There is facility of re-planning, re-teaching and reevaluation. It puts the teacher under the microscope. All the faults of the teacher are observed. The problem of discipline can also be controlled.

Skills practiced • • • Introduction Skill of Probing Questions Skill of Explanation Skill of Stimulus Variation Skill of Black-board Writing Skill of Achieving Closure

1 -Introduction Skill • Preliminary Attention Gaining • Use of previous knowledge • Use of Appropriate Device • Link with new topic

2 -Skill of Probing Question • Prompting • Seeking Further Information • Refocussing • Redirecting Questions

3 -Skill of Explanation • Clear beginning statement: • Lack of Irrelevant Statement • Fluency in Language • Connecting Links • Use of Proper Words

4 -Skill of Stimulus Variation • Body Movement • Gestures • Change in Voice • Focussing • Eye-contact and eye-movement • Pausing

5 -Skill of Black-board Writing • • Legibility ( Easy to read ) Size and alignment ( In a straight line ) Highlighting main points Utilization of the space Blackboard summary Correctness Position of the teacher and Contact with the pupils

6 -Skill of Achieving Closure The lesson/period remains ineffective in the absence of proper closure.

Feedback in Micro teaching • • • The success of micro teaching depends on feedback. Can be used within the process of teaching as well as after the lesson taught. It is used in various forms by the supervisor.

Advantages Of Microteaching • • • Sharpen the teaching skills Eliminate gross errors Build up confidence Understanding behaviors required in classroom teaching It is a continuous training programme and so also trains the senior teachers • It provides expert supervision and constructive feedback • There is no adverse consequence on the teacher or the student while learning

SUMMARY • Microteaching involves presentation of micro lesson • Audience…. small group of peers. • Feedback given by peers role playing as students • Participants learn about strengths & weakness in themselves as teachers • Plan strategies for improvement in performance
