Mgt. 667 – Leadership Session 3 Rex Mitchell Spring 2006
Engaging With Readings What are my reactions to this: thoughts, feelings? What do I agree with, like, want to remember and use? Why? What do I disagree with, wish were different, would change, would expand on. . . ? Why? What connections & expansions can I make from my experience?
K&P’s Five Practices Model the way Inspire a Shared Vision Challenge the Process Enable Others to Act Encourage the Heart
Challenge the Process (Practice 3)
Discuss in a new group for each chapter: Reactions, thoughts, feelings Agree with, like, want to remember - most important points from both essentials & discussion, and from action steps Disagree with, would change, would expand on
I will assign groups to brief us on at least two most important points from the two essentials and discussion at the first of the chapter - then all can discuss Other groups to brief us on at least two most important points from action steps then all discuss Will take chapters one at a time
Search for Opportunities …by seeking innovative ways to change, grow, and improve Commitment 5, ch. 7 Seize the initiative Make challenge meaningful Innovate and create Look outward for fresh ideas Find meaningful challenges for yourself & for others
Experiment and Take Risks …by constantly generating small wins and learning from mistakes Commitment 6, ch. 8 Initiate incremental steps and small wins Learn from your experience Promote psychological hardiness in yourself and others
Instr. 2, Risk-taking Propensity Reactions, thoughts? How important is risk taking for a leader? How to distinguish between “good” and “dumb” risks?
Both ch. 7 & 8 encourage creativity and breaking mindsets, norms, patterns, and assumptions that limit us
Enable Others to Act (Practice 4)
For these two chapters: One group to brief us on at least two important points from essentials & discussion Another group to brief us on two important points from action steps Then, for each topic, 1 -2 other groups have the assignment of having a constructive dialogue with the presenter to ask probing questions and offer comments to deepen the content
Foster Collaboration …by promoting cooperative goals and building trust Commitment 7, ch. 9 Leadership is not a solo act Create a climate of trust Facilitate positive interdependence Support face-to-face interactions
Strengthen Others …by sharing power and discretion Commitment 8, ch. 10 Ensure self-leadership Provide choice Develop competence and confidence – help others feel strong, able, valued Foster accountability
Encourage the Heart (Practice 5)
Recognize Contributions …by showing appreciation for individual excellence Commitment 9, ch. 11 Focus on clear standards & expectations Expect the best (Pygmalion effect) Pay attention Link rewards with performance Personalize recognition
Pygmalion Effect Can be self, producing self-fulfilling predictions Can be from or toward others Both sources can have powerful effects Think of examples: – Negative – Positive
Celebrate Values & Victories …by creating a spirit of community Commitment 10, ch. 12 Create a spirit of community, of shared values Set the example Tell the story Have enthusiasm and fun
Passion-Compassion Game Read K & P p. 375 Get into pairs One person selects & talks about a topic re which s/he feels passionately Other person plays compassionate role, encouraging expressiveness, listening actively, drawing forth enthusiasm – at some length Switch roles
