Slavery and War �Many saw Texas as a place to expand the Southern economy (slave-based agriculture) �Slavery illegal in Mexico �Arguments over sovereignty (govern oneself) and slavery led to the Texas Revolution in 1835 and Texas Independence in 1836.
Manifest Destiny and Mexico
�Mexico: The Mexican government did not recognize or accept Texas’ independence. In the eyes ( ) of the Mexican government, Texas was still under Mexican control. �Texas: Slavery was made legal in 1836. Requested to be annexed (brought into) the U. S. in 1836 (at the end of the Texas Independence War).
�U. S. : At first, rejects the annexation of Texas. Feared it would cause a war with Mexico. �December 29, 1845: Texas becomes a U. S. state.

War! �President Polk, won the presidency by promising westward expansion , sent General Taylor and 3, 500 troops to the area south of the Nueces River. �Mexico responded by sending 2, 000 cavalry units, which killed about 70 U. S. soldiers. �May 13, 1846: The U. S. declares war on Mexico.
Treaty (agreement) of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848 �Mexico lost the war. �Mexico ceded (gave up power or control) the land that makes up California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. This land is known as the Mexican Cession. �Mexico received $15 million for the land. �The U. S. promised to protect the former Mexican citizens and provide them all the rights of a U. S. citizen
