Mass The metric unit used to measure mass is grams. A gram is about the mass of a paper clip.
Distance The standard metric unit for distance (length) is the meter. A mile is about 1609 meters. A meter is about half the height of a normal human.
Time Time in the metric system is measured the same all over the world. Minutes, seconds, weeks, months, etc. are used.
Temperature The metric system measures temperature in degrees Celsius. The boiling point of water is 100 degrees Celsius and the freezing point of water is 0 degrees Celsius.
Velocity Velocity (speed) is measured in meters (distance) per second. m/s = meters per second Americans measure velocity in miles per hour.
Acceleration Acceleration is the change in velocity over time. Acceleration is measured in meters per second squared. m/s 2
Density Density is mass divided by volume. D= m/v Density of a solid is measured in g/cm³. Density of a liquid is g/m. L.
Force The SI (or metric) unit is the Newton, defined as the force needed to accelerate a mass of 1 kg at a rate of 1 meter/sec 2.
Energy The Joule is the basic unit of energy in the metric system.
Power The basic metric unit for electrical power measurement is the watt, which is equal to one joule per second.
