Metric System The metric system is based on the number 10

• We are one of the only countries that does not use the metric system!!

Why hasn’t the U. S. changed to the metric system? http: //news. discovery. com/tech/videos/time-to-switch-to-the-metric-system 130827. htm

Top 10 Reasons the United States Should Use the Metric System (or SI) 1) It’s the system 95 percent of the world uses 2) It’s easier to make conversions (You just move the decimal point right and left) 3) Teaching two measurement systems to children is confusing 4) It’s the language of science 5) It’s the language of medicine 6) Conversion errors by the humans using them are inevitable (We lost a Mars orbiter that way and pharmacy mistakes are common) 7) It’s the language of international commerce 8) Many hobbies and sports use the metric system 9) Its use is necessary for travel outside of the US 10) So we look less foolish and ignorant to the rest of the world

Metric System • A decimal system of units for measuring length, volume, mass and temperature • Based on the number 10

Base Units Measurement SI Unit – – meter (m) liter (L) gram (g) degrees Celcius (˚C) Length Volume Mass Temperature

Appropriate Units • When measuring… …it is important to combine the appropriate base unit with appropriate prefix Ex. – Mass of your body kilograms – Length of an eyelash millimeters – Volume of water in your bathtub decaliters

Important Temperatures: • Freezing point of water 0 ºC • Boiling point of water 100 ºC • Normal Body temperature 37 ºC • Room Temperature 23 ºC

Matching… C _ Volume of water in a water bottle A. 1 gram A _ Mass of a raisin B. 26 ˚C D _ Length of your table C. 500 milliliters B _ Temperature outside yesterday F _ Temperature outside in January in NY _ Freezing point of water F D. 1. 7 meters E. 67 ˚C = 152. 6 ˚F F. 0 ˚C G. 5 kilometers H. 500 grams

Metric Conversions • To change from one metric unit to another, it is VERY easy. • You just move the decimal point!

Here’s The Trick 5400000 Examples: 54. 0 kg = ______ cg Kilo k (King) h (Henry) Da (Died) 10000 10. 0 liters _____ milliliters milli centi d (Drinking) c (Chocolate) m (Milk) deci Base unit (meters, liters, or grams) Deca hetco U (Unexpectedly)

Metric Conversions • When changing from large to small Move the decimal to the RIGHT • Example: 132, 000. 132 km = _____ m 68. 0. 68 Da. L = _____ d. L

Metric Conversions • When changing from small to large Move the decimal to the LEFT • Example: 0. 03565 35. 65 dm = ____hm 0. 0125 cg = _____ hg. 00578 5. 78 L = _____ k. L
