Group of 17 th c. poets: Donne, Herbert, Marvell & others Term coined by Augustan poets like John Dryden & Samuel Johnson, who disdained “unnaturalness” in the metaphysical poems Characteristics: • Poetic wit • Syntactic complexity • Elaborate and intricate, though often surprising or unconventional imagery • Conceit: extended and logically complex metaphor that is more intellectual than sensual
