Mephibosheth Pdt Daniel Hanafi w 2 Samuel 9
Mephibosheth Pdt. Daniel Hanafi
w 2 Samuel 9: 1 -2 (NKJV) w Now David said, "Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? " [2] And there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba. So when they had called him to David, the king said to him, "Are you Ziba? " And he said, "At your service!"
2 Samuel 9: 3 -5 (NKJV) Then the king said, "Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God? " And Ziba said to the king, "There is still a son of Jonathan who is lame in his feet. " [4] So the king said to him, "Where is he? " And Ziba said to the king, "Indeed he is in the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, in Lo Debar. " [5] Then King David sent and brought him out of the house of Machir the son of Ammiel, from Lo Debar.
w 2 Samuel 9: 6 -7 (NKJV) w Now when Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, had come to David, he fell on his face and prostrated himself. Then David said, "Mephibosheth? " And he answered, "Here is your servant!" [7] So David said to him, "Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table
w 2 Samuel 9: 8 -9 (NKJV) w Then he bowed himself, and said, "What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I? " w [9] And the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "I have given to your master's son all that belonged to Saul and to all his house.
w You therefore, and your sons and your servants, shall work the land for him, and you shall bring in the harvest, that your master's son may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth your master's son shall eat bread at my table always. " Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. [11] Then Ziba said to the king, "According to all that my lord the king has commanded his servant, so will your servant do. " "As for Mephibosheth, " said the king, "he shall eat at my table like one of the king's sons. "
w 2 Samuel 9: 12 -13 (NKJV) w Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Micha. And all who dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants of Mephibosheth. [13] So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king's table. And he was lame in both his feet.
w 2 Samuel 4: 4 (NKJV) w Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel; and his nurse took him up and fled. And it happened, as she made haste to flee, that he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth. w Our lives can also experience a sudden calamity!
w Mephibosheth’s calamity: – The promise of power and riches is gone suddenly (Saul the emperor; was his grandfather) – The promise of happiness and honor is gone suddenly (Jonathan was his father; a good and gentle man, full of love and honor) – The promise of a fruitful future is gone suddenly (he lost his health in a second) – Lost hope: he lives in a land whose king was his family’s enemy – Lost honor: he lives off the support of his slave
w Grace is the initiative of God, not ours! w God is seeking us! Grace started on the throne and sought us in our hiding place. w Grace is seeking us when we are not seeking Him w Romans 5: 8 (NKJV) w But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
w Grace remembers us when the world has long forgotten us (Lodebar = very small remote place) w Grace only wants to give; it doesn’t expect anything in return. w God is calling us! John 15: 16 (NKJV) w You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the
w He called us when we were still in. . . w Lo debar w Pig stye (prodigal) w By the well at midday(Samaritan Woman) w On a stone ”pillow”(Jacob) w In the belly of a fish (Jonah)
Not only saved but exalted to be used again! w At the bottom of a dry well (Joseph) w In a lonely boat (Simon Peter) w Asking to die under a lone tree (Elijah) w In the backside of the wilderness (Moses) w In a sleepy pasture (David) w In a busy fresh-ploughed field (Elisha)
w He wants to carry us w Mephibosheth was helpless and lame, so David sent his servant to carry him w Isaiah 46: 4 (NKJV) w Even to your old age, I am He, w And even to gray hairs I will carry you! w I have made, and I will bear; w Even I will carry, and will deliver you.
w Matthew 11: 28 (NKJV) w Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. w The only condition is ”come” – don’t say ”I am not ready” as if we actually are able to ready ourselves to be worthy in His sight. .
w The price has been paid! w 2 Samuel 9: 1 (NKJV) w Now David said, "Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? “ w Matthew 20: 28 (NKJV) w just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. "
w 1 Peter 1: 18 -19 (NIV) w For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, [19] but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. w Galatians 4: 4 -5 (NKJV) w But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, [5] to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as
w Grace needs to be accepted w Grace is very expensive, but free because someone paid the price w 2 Samuel 9: 7 (NKJV) So David said to him, "Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father's sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually. "
w Accepting grace means to respond! David called and sent a messenger, but Mephibosheth must accept the invitation! w Hebrews 2: 3 (NKJV) how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, w 2 Samuel 9: 8 (NKJV) Then he bowed himself, and said, "What is your servant, that you should look upon such a dead dog as I? “ w Accepting grace means to act! Leaving the old handicapped life and accepting the new. He could have let Lodebar kept you imprisoned with bitterness (against David)
w Grace restores us to our place: w 2 things are restored: w Position: David brought back Mephibosheth to the palace. 2 Samuel 9: 9 (NKJV) And the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, "I have given to your master's son all that belonged to Saul and to all his house.
w Status: David brought Mephibosheth to his own table w 2 Samuel 9: 10 -11 (NKJV) But Mephibosheth your master's son shall eat bread at my table always. “ [11] "As for Mephibosheth, " said the king, "he shall eat at my table like one of the king's sons. “ [13] So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem, for he ate continually at the king's table. w Not a burden, regulation or obligation, but opportunity, honor and favor!
