Organisation of Assignment or Short Test Quiz Question Bank 1. If you are making a online quiz for in-lecture use or for a short assessment, then make a new folder in the question bank and label it Quiz – “Assessment Topic name” 2. Assessment Topic name is whatever you chose to call your quiz. 3. For Example: I made an Opthalmogy Quiz for another lecturer, Gavin which I ran in 2018 and will run again in 2019. All questions for this quiz are in the question bank folder called “Quiz – Opthalmology” 4. I DID NOT place the questions in the “Opthalmology” exam folder. These topic folders are reserved for questions that appear in any mid or end of semester exams and have been proof read by the course co-ordinators previously. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 5 4 3 Menu
Viewing Questions in the Question Bank Menu 1. I routinely click the tick box called “show question details”, so I can see the answer options for any questions as I scroll through the page eg. MCQ options or short answer marking rubric. 1 adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 6
Question title - Naming Convention 1. All questions have topic specific titles and numbered from 001 to 999. The abbreviated title has already been chosen eg “Derm” in this case, so all new questions in this folder will start with “Derm”. We CANNOT number them 1, 2, 3 or 99, these need to be in the format 001, 002, 003, 099. This is needed so questions appear in a numerical order, when scrolling through the page. Menu 1 2 4 2. For questions that have multiple parts, or related to previous questions, the titles have a, b, c. . etc added to the end of the title in the order the questions should appear. So in the example shown Derm 014 has multiple parts, so the first part of the question is called Derm 014 a, the next is Derm 014 b, then Derm 014 c. This will keep associated questions appearing together and allow easier navigation. 3. All questions must be sequentially numbered, so new questions will generally have the largest number and appear at the bottom of the page. Unless it is a new part to a previous series of questions eg if a fourth part is added to Derm 014 it would be called Derm 014 d. 4. The students will not see the question titles in their exam they will just see Question 1, Question 2, Question 3 etc. So when wording a question with multiple parts, incorporate a name for the animal / case if possible to help with student comprehension. In this example the cat is called “Tom”. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 7 2 2 4 4

Adding an image, video or table to question Menu There are multiple ways to add images to a question, however the way outlined below is recommend to avoid the disassociation of images within a question. 1. All exam images need to be manually uploaded into the “files” section of canvas. 2 2. There is a folder called“ S 1 & S 2 Exam and Quiz Files”. Each question bank topic should have a subfolder of the same name added in the folder. If one does not exist please add a new one. 2 3. Once you have started adding a new question, you will know what the title of the question will be eg “Derm 014 a”. 4. On your computer rename the image to include the Question title at the start of the name. Eg “Derm 014 a Atopic Dermatitis” in this example. 5. Copy your image file to the matching topic’s subfolder. This can be done by drag and drop or various other ways. In this case the “Dermatology – Skin Surgery” subfolder. It is also possible to rename the file once you have copied it into canvas. 6. This allows us to know what images are associated with which questions. Especially important if the image association to the question is lost in canvas. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 11 1 4
Adding an image, video or table to question Now that your file is stored in canvas, you need to link the image to the file. This is called “embedding”. 1 - Click on the embed icon (looks like a picture). This will bring up a popup box. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 12 Menu 1
Adding an image, video or table to question 1. Click on the “Canvas” tab 2. Click on “Course files” folder 3. Now navigate to your topics subfolder where you have previously saved the image and started it name with the same name as your question’s title. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 13 Menu 1 2 3
Adding an image, video or table to question Menu 1. Find your image file and left click on it 2. Note the Dimension Tab. If the height multiplied by the width is more than 9, 000 pixels it will not display correct in Canvas lockdown browser exam viewer software. You must reduce the image pixel count before the image can be used. This can be done by editing any one of the dimensions. The aspect ratio will be preserved. 1 3. In this example the pixel count is 518 x 345 = 178, 710 pixels, so the image is fine to use in canvas. 4. Click Update and the image should appear in your question. 5. When you have finished writing your question don’t forget to press the “Update question” button at the bottom, otherwise your changes will not be saved. Note canvas will let you edit and add multiple questions at once, so be careful to save all questions open for editing. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 14 2 4
Mandatory Proof Reading 1. New questions or significantly altered previous question must be placed in the folder called “New Exam Questions – Awaiting checking by Olaf / Lynette”. These will be checked after the exam question submission deadline. 2. Moving questions between question banks is very easy and quick to do. https: //community. canvaslms. com/docs/DOC-13070415250751 3. Once the course co-ordinators have checked them we will move them back into the appropriate question bank folder. 4. Once I generate a quiz (exam), any changes made in the question banks will NOT appear in the exam. Also if you edit the question directly in the quiz it will not update the question in the question bank. So all changes for an exam must be made in the question bank, before I generate the quiz. adelaide. edu. au 21 January, 2019 15 Menu 1
