How common is Anxiety? • Most common in women • Most common mental illness in the US • 1 in 4 adults have anxiety

Symptoms • Anxiety attacks • Panicky at social events • Live with tension • Fears • Always worrying when most wouldn't worry
Diagnosis • Self assessment questionnaire online before getting tested • Doctor looks into family history • Physical examination is essential, helps find symptoms • Accompany many other medical disorders • Many ways of testing for anxiety
Treatment • Lifestyle change- exercise, well balanced meals, sleep • Councilors • Therapy • Medications • Limit alcohol and caffeine • Taking time out • IT IS CURABLE
Anxiety in the long term • Low rates of remission after 5 years if received treatment • Naturally occurring anxiety can take longer to get off treatments
Impact on youth • Normal to have some anxiety throughout childhood • One in eight children suffer from anxiety • Effects school, work, social events, higher chance of substance abuse • Long term consequences for mental health/development • Teens don’t normally need medication however it can be prescribed
Cost on economy • Canada spends around $17. 3 billion per year • one quarter of Canadians cant work due to anxiety • 50% don’t get treatment necessary
