What factors affect mental health? • Over time, many theories have been developed in regards to the causes of mental health. Myths can develop and can be discussed over many generations without any data and accuracy. • What we do know from scientific research is…
Biopsychosocial Model • Biopsychosocial model- used to describe the development of illness through the interaction of biological factors, psychological factors, and social factors – Biological: genes from parents, structure of brain, chemicals in the brain – Psychological: thoughts, experiences, personal beliefs, personality – Social: environmental stress (trauma, assault), cultural factors, discrimination
Biopsychosocial Model (Cont’d) • We can aim treatment at the three areas of the biopsychosocial model for the best outcome! – Biological medications, nutrition and physical activity – Pyschological education, psychotherapy, coping skills – Social environmental management, stigma of mental illness, advocacy
Vulnerability-stress model • The vulnerability-stress model is based on the fact that – A) one can inherit a predisposition or increased vulnerability to a certain illness • Having a family history of mental illness does not mean you will get the illness, but you do have an increased risk • Example: Schizophrenia – Incidence in general population = 1% – Incidence if first degree relative has schizophrenia = 10% – B) one can experience a stressor which can trigger the emergence of mental health disorder
