“At least yer feyther does that” It is always a good idea to put the quote into context but you MUST analyse the quote. How can you improve? This shows Maggie’s frustration as the men are supposed to go and work yet Alec has lain about all day and not done anything. Her frustration is evident through the addition of the words “at least” which suggests that she expects very little help from the men in her life but she does expect them to play their part. John, her husband may not help around the house but he tries to earn money for the household. Alec is doing neither which causes her huge frustration.

“At least yer feyther does that” How can you improve? This shows Maggie’s frustration as the men are supposed to go and work yet Alec has lain about all day and not done anything. You could even add the quote: “Nae work for the men. Aye plenty for the women. Oh, I'm that sick I could see. . . ” which highlights the inequality of their lives as men and women. The inclusion of the word “sick” shows that its ongoing and has been for sometime. It is a situation that Maggie deals with all the time but its frustrating her because it never changes.

”Oh, I’m that sick I could see the hale lot o ye in hell!”

”Oh, I’m that sick I could see the hale lot o ye in hell!” § In these lines Maggie is very annoyed at How can you improve? everyone in her house as all the work is left for her to do and no one ever thinks about Maggie for once but all she does is think about her family before herself. No one can be bothered to help her even when she is extremely tired. MARKER’S COMMENT § Analyse the QUOTE more specifically.

No one can be bothered to help her even when she is extremely tired. § Maggie often claims she is “sick” of aspects of her life. This suggests that the situation within her household never changes and it is always she who works the hardest with little or no help. This repetition symbolises her frustration. § The fact that she declares they could all go to “hell” is clearly a cry of frustration as Maggie loves her family dearly and works so hard to ensure that their lives are not a living hell. She is obviously at the end of her tether to shout this at them.
