D. , Recreation Professions, College of Education and Human Services, SIU Abstract • To investigate the effect of “Indoor Ecotherapy”, ten memory care residents viewed a video of nature photographs, w/classical music. Residents’ tranquility levels were measured before and after viewing the video. Resident’s reported tranquility levels and staff observers’ perceived tranquility levels for each resident were both higher after the intervention. Resident’s written comments and staff observers’ written comments about each resident before and after the intervention, were used as part of the analysis. • ).
Ecotherapy - includes a wide range of treatment programs, to improve mental and physical wellbeing through experiencing the beneficial affects of nature and outdoor activities in nature. ØThe concept of connecting with nature has been show to have positive health benefits. “Ecotherapy” was coined by Howard Clinebell in his 1996 book Ecotherapy: Healing Ourselves, Healing the Earth Dr. Jun Kim – First used the term “Indoor Ecotherapy” in 2015 Indoor Ecotherapy - any elements of nature experienced within indoor settings i. e. , photos of nature, flowers, natural views through windows, etc.
