It is all about the expert in non-operative spine care developing a working relationship with the expert in spine surgery to improve spinecare
WHY SEEK SPECIALIZED CARE OF THE SPINE ?
THE INTRICATE SPINE The spine is complex and is comprised of: • • • an intricate network of blood vessels countless specialized nerve endings hundreds of small nerve fibers which connect to structures of the spine more than 220 specialized ligaments greater than 120 individual muscles over 100 intricate joints 24 vertebrae along with the sacrum and coccyx 31 pairs of spinal nerves 23 intervertebral discs
WHO NEEDS CARE OF THE SPINE ?
BACK PAIN: THE STATISTICS • Eight out of ten adults will experience low back pain sometime during their lifetime • After the common cold problems related to the low back are the most frequent cause of lost workdays in individuals over 45 years of age • Back pain ranks second to headaches as the most frequent location for pain • Greater than 65 million Americans experience back pain every year • Back injuries are one of the most common causes for disability • The annual costs associated with back pain runs into the tens of billions of dollars considering lost productivity, medical expenses and worker’s compensation benefits
WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH THE SPINE?
CAUSES OF BACK PAIN Includes but is not limited to • Facet Syndrome • Segmental • • • Dysfunction Disc Herniation Tumor Cyst Radiculopathy Scar Tissue (Fibrosis) • Fracture • Infection • Primary Cancer • Metastatic Cancer • Spinal Stenosis • Surgical • Instrumentation Transitional Segment
COMMON SPINE CONDITIONS • Facet Syndrome • Segmental • • Dysfunction Disc Herniation Spondylosis Degenerative Disc Disease Radiculopathy • Scoliosis • Myelopathy • Spondylolithesis • Spinal Stenosis • Muscular • • Deconditioning Disc Bulge Transitional Segment
WHAT IS COOPERATIVE SPINECARE ? Cooperative spine care refers to two or more health care professionals who work together to preserve or restore spinal integrity while prioritizing the patient’s well being.
COMMON GROUND Chiropractic Physicians and Neurosurgeons both have extensive training in Neurology Biomechanics and Disorders of the Spine
WHO NEEDS COOPERATIVE CARE OF THE SPINE ?
COOPERATIVE SPINECARE Candidates for cooperative spinecare include individuals who: • have multiple areas of the spine involved to varying degrees • are not responding to a conservative approach • require medication and a physical medicine approach • have progressive neurological compromise • have a complicated spinal condition • have failed to respond to surgery
STAGES OF SPINE DISEASE AND THE SPECTRUM OF CARE
Cooperative Spinecare Early Stage End Stage
Together chiropractic physicians and neurosurgeons can care for the entire spectrum of spine conditions Chiropractic Care Neurosurgical Care
WHAT IS A SPINE PHYSICIAN? A spine physician is a chiropractic physician or a neurosurgeon who emphasizes care of the spine in their practice. Typically more than 50% of the practice is dedicated to caring for patients with spine disorders.
WHAT IS THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SPINE PHYSICIANS? An Organization for Leaders in the Field of Spinecare
An organization of Neurosurgeons & Chiropractic Physicians dedicated to conservative and cooperative spine care
Mission Statement The objectives of the AASP are to: • Promote conservative and cooperative spine care • Cultivate open dialogue and clinical interaction between • • • members Promote continuing education for chiropractic physicians and members Expand available therapeutic options for patients Provide educational resource for physicians and their patients
