MELTING ICE CREAM PROBLEM USING SCIENCE TO FIND
MELTING ICE CREAM PROBLEM USING SCIENCE TO FIND A SOLUTION
STANDARDS • S 8 P 1 c. Describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas states. • S 8 P 2 d. Describe how heat can be transferred through matter by the collisions of atoms (conduction) or through space (radiation). In a liquid or gas, currents will facilitate the transfer of heat (convection).
PROBLEM • You work on an ice cream cart at Six Flags, and you have had customers complain that the ice cream is too soft and melts (becomes liquid) too quickly after they purchase it. • If sales continue to fall because of this problem, YOU WILL BE FIRED!!
PROBLEM • Currently the carts use H 20 (water) ice to keep the ice cream cold. You need to come up with an alternative solution to H 2 O ice. Your supervisor has suggested dry ice would be better, but needs you to scientifically prove it is better.
PRODUCT • Create a business proposal for the CTO (chief thrill officer) that scientifically explains that dry is better than water ice. • Proposal will be worked on in class and is due Wednesday, 9/21/16.
PROCESS • Depict states of matter from a particle perspective. • Describe how matter and phase changes are affected by energy. • Explain heat transfer via conduction, convection, and radiation.
BRAINSTORMING • What do we know? • What do we need to know?
