Jon’s Ideas About Reading l Jon thinks it is very important to be a good reader. l He checks out Mysteries and Adventure Genre books from the library l In his free time, he prefers to read Sports and Race Car magazines l He admits that he puts more effort into reading material that he finds interesting.
Jon’s Classroom Behavior and Progress l Is always prepared and attempts all assignments l He rarely finishes, however, because his reading comprehension is not at 3 rd grade level. l On the online assessment tool, Success Maker, his average in Math is 50% while in Language Arts it is only 37%. l To ensure Jon makes AYP , School Administrators have determined that he needs to be in the RTI program. l Here he receives direct instruction in small homogeneous groups in Reading Workshop, after school tutoring and assistance with homework assignments.
How is he responding? l Jon continues to score in the 30% rank on all his Language Arts assessments on Success Maker l He reads at a Level 16 on the Rigby Benchmark Series – the 3 rd grade reading level starts at 22 l Jon is, therefore, a struggling reader l As such he was selected to participate in a Case Study
Case Study Design l Jon received instructions from a Student Teacher in a 1: 1 ratio l The ST used direct instruction, guided practice and individual activities based on Jon’s interest and cultural background to plan lessons l It was determined by weeks of kid watching and note taking that Jon is at the Early Reader stage. l To plan lessons for Jon, the following assessment were administered: Word Writing, Phonics Inventory, Fry’s Sight Words and Phonograms
Jon’s Skill Needs l The results showed that Jon needed instruction in the silent “e” rule, and digraphs “oa”, “wh”, and “ch”. l He also needed to experience many opportunities where he received positive compliments for his efforts. l It was determined that it was best that Jon receive instruction in a more private setting where he would not feel peer pressure to be correct all the time.
The Lessons and Results l Jon was a great sport and attempted all assignments he was given l His response to additional reading was refreshing because he wanted extra time to reread each book. l His favorites were about Killer Whales and Rodents, examples of his work follows:
Case Study Summative Assessment • At the end of the lessons, Jon was assessed again • The Rigby Running Reading Log was administered • The results show that Jon’s independent reading level is 19 (scored 98% accuracy) and instructional level is 20 • He gained 4 reading levels
Recommendations l Jon responded well and made great improvements l To keep this progress ongoing , Jon needs to keep practicing reading books at his level l He, also, needs additional sessions which use the direct instruction delivery in the lesson design l These lessons should focus on the digraphs “ai”, “ng” and the silent “e” rule.
