Meiosis
Meiosis • The purpose of meiosis is to make 4 sex cells (ova or spermatozoa) which are used for sexual reproduction. • During fertilization, spermatozoa and ova (each having 23 chromosomes) unite to form a cell with 46 chromosomes (full set). • Spermatozoa and ova are called gametes.
The Process of Meiosis Part 1: - Diploid mother cell makes a copy of each of the 46 chromosomes in its nucleus. - The chromosomes separate into two identical groups and push the cell apart until the cell splits in 2. - Two identical diploid (contain 46 chromosomes each) cells are produced **Part 1 is the same as Mitosis**
The Process of Meiosis Part 2: - Each cell divides in 2 without replicating the chromosomes in the nucleus. - During this division process, each cell randomly distributes one chromosome from each of its 23 pairs to its 2 new daughter cells. End Result: - 4 cells with 23 chromosomes (haploid sex cells). - Each of the 4 sex cells have a completely different assortment of chromosomes making them unique from one another. - This results in genetic diversity (not one ovum or sperm is identical to another)
Summary of Mitosis & Meiosis Mitosis Meiosis Type of cells you start off with Somatic Cells Diploid (46 chromosomes or 23 pairs) Type of Cells obtained Somatic Cells Diploid (46 chromosomes or 23 pairs) Reproductive Cells Haploid (23 chromosomes or 1 chromosome from each pair) Functions Growth Repair of cells Production of reproductive cells to allow for sexual reproduction
Try This! 1. Define cell division. 2. Define cellular regeneration* 3. What type of cell division helps cells to regenerate?
Try This! For each of the following statements, indicate whether it involves mitosis or meiosis: a) Results in daughter cells that are genetically identical to the original cell. ________ b) Reproductive cells are formed through this type of cell division. ________ c) Four daughter cells are formed from a single mother cell. ________ d) The daughter cells obtained each contain 23 chromosomes. ________
Try This! For each of the following statements, indicate whether it involves mitosis or meiosis: e) Two successive divisions are required. _____ f) Allows the organism to grow. _____ g) Produced diploid cells. _____ h) Is the mechanism of division for somatic cells. ____ i) Produced haploid cells. ______
