Meiosis
Bell Work • What is mitosis? What types of cells go through mitosis? How many cells result at the end of mitosis? • Assignments: • Amoeba Sisters: Meiosis Video Guide • 11. 4 Meiosis Vocabulary (In notebook) • Meiosis Diagrams and Notes
Amoeba Sisters • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Vz. DMG 7 ke 69 g
Bell Work • What are at least two differences between mitosis and meiosis? Assignments: • Vocabulary • Meiosis Diagrams and Notes (2 colors) • Mitosis/Meiosis Comparison Chart (In Notebook)
11. 4 Vocabulary (page 323) • Homologous • Diploid • Haploid • Meiosis • Tetrad • Crossing-Over • Zygote
Meiosis Drawing /Notes • Color-code the chromosomes. • 2 colors: 1 color represents the mother’s chromosomes, the other color represents the father’s chromosomes. • Specific notes for each phase.
In Notebook Mitosis Type of cell that uses this process Number of divisions Number of daughter cells Chromosome number in parent cell in humans Chromosome number in daughter cells in humans Involves the separation of homologous chromosomes, if yes when? Involves the separation of sister chromatids, if yes when? Purpose of the process Meiosis
Meiosis Notes
Bell Work • What is difference between asexual and sexual reproduction? Assignment: Meiosis Notes Turn in Bell Work ( 1 stamp)
Bell Work • What is the difference between autosomes and sex chromosomes? Assignments: Finish Meiosis notes and hopefully chromosomal mutations.
Bell Work • What is a karyotype? What information can you get from looking at a karyotype? Assignment: • Chromosomal Mutations and Nondisjunction Notes • Karyotype Lab • Meiosis Review Meiosis Test Friday
Chromosomal Mutations • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Gie. Z 3 pk 9 YVo • Begin at 3: 18
Chromosomal Mutations • Any change in the structure or number of chromosomes • Large scale: Affect many genes
5 Types 1. Deletion 2. Duplication 3. Inversion 4. Translocation 5. Non. Disjunction
Chromosomal Deletion One or more genes are removed Causes: Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (severe intellectual delays) cri du chat syndrome (mewing sounds, intellectual delays)
Chromosomal Duplication A segment of genes is copied twice and added to the chromosome Causes: Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (high arched foot, claw feet, confined to a wheelchair)
Chromosomal Inversion a segment of genes flip end-to-end on the chromosome Causes: Four-Ring Syndrome (cleft palate, club feet)
Chromosomal Translocation Material is swapped with another chromosome Causes: Burkitt’s Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes, in children)
Nondisjunction • Chromosomes FAIL TO SEPARATE during meiosis • Meiosis I Nondisjunction • Meiosis II Nondisjunction
Nondisjunction • Produces gametes (and therefore a baby) with one missing chromosome or one extra chromosome
Fertilization
Nondisjunction • Every cell in that baby’s body will have __ copies of this chromosome instead of___. • This condition is called ______. • Trisomy 13 = Individual has _____ copies of chromosome # ____
Nondisjunction • Every cell in that baby’s body will have 3 copies of this chromosome instead of 2. • This condition is called _____. • Trisomy 13 = Individual has _____ copies of chromosome # ____
Nondisjunction • Every cell in that baby’s body will have 3 copies of this chromosome instead of 2. • This condition is called TRISOMY • Trisomy 13 = Individual has __ copies of chromosome # ____.
Nondisjunction • Every cell in that baby’s body will have 3 copies of this chromosome instead of 2. • This condition is called TRISOMY • Trisomy 13 = Individual has 3 copies of chromosome # 13.
Chromosomal Mutations • Most chromosomal mutations are lethal • If the fetus survives: Tend to cause wide -spread atypical characteristics • Example: Patau's syndrome
Patau’s Syndrome • Cause: Nondisjunction of chromosome 13 • Three copies of chromosome 13 = “TRISOMY 13”
Trisomy 18 - Patau's Syndrome
Genetic Screening - Amniocentesis
Karyotype Lab • Read the background information • At least 7 bullet points as you read through • These are your karyotype notes so make them meaningful.
When you are finished with the lab… 1. Red Learning Goal Sheet “End of Unit” scale and explanation. 2. Meiosis Review( Cross off # 20, 21, 26, 28) Meiosis Test Friday!
