Medieval Japan Journal Project For this project, you will be taking on the role of an important figure in Medieval Japan’s feudal society. You will research key terms and questions related to this role. Then, you will create 3 journal entries describing your life as the Medieval figure you have been assigned. Each journal entry must be a minimum of 5 sentences long. Each entry must be 1 -2 slides. Include relevant images to illustrate your life on each slide.

Journal Entry 1 What is the bushido, and what does this word mean? What characteristics do you have to follow in order to properly adhere to the bushido? What does your title of “samurai” mean? Who are you loyal to and work for? Why did this person hire you, and what do you get in return for your service? Would you rather die in battle or betray your lord/be captured? Explain your point of view.

Journal Entry 2 What 3 areas do you focus on for military training and fighting? Why? What 3 areas do you focus on for your mental training? Why? What 2 art forms do you focus on learning? Why? What type of ceremony do you participate in, and why? What do you rely on for spiritual strength? Explain your beliefs.

Journal Entry 3 What type of animal do you ride into battle? What 3 types of weapons do you use? Explain the importance of your sword. Explain what your armor, helmet, and mask are made of. How do these items look? Name and describe at least 3 specific parts of your armor. Explain 2 -3 advantages and 2 -3 disadvantages of your armor.

Journal Entry 1 What do you own a lot of? What type of private army do you have? Do you pay taxes to the government? Why or why not? Explain your relationship to the government overall.

Journal Entry 2 Why do you hire samurai warriors? Who do you want them to fight for you? In the lord-vassal system, you are the lord. Explain what the terms “lord” and “vassal” mean. What do you give your vassals, and what do they give you in return as their lord? Explain what feudalism means. How did the lord-vassal system you are part of start feudalism in Medieval Japan?

Journal Entry 3 Who do you pledge loyalty to? However, why can it be said that you run your land like an independent kingdom? How did feudalism increase your power?

Journal Entry 1 Why was the first shogun given this title in 1192? Why did the emperor give a man the title of shogun? What does the title of “shogun” mean?

Journal Entry 2 Explain how the emperor and the shogun created 2 governments in Medieval Japan. What is the shogunate? Who did you appoint to be your advisors and run the provinces? What 3 tasks did you have these warriors do for you?

Journal Entry 3 Even though you rule on behalf of the emperor, why can it be said that your own interests come first? Who is the real ruler of Japan – the emperor or the shogun (you)? Why are you known as the most important daimyo, or large landholder? What do you rule over?
