MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY: BODY POSITIONING CHAPTER 2
DIRECTIONAL AND POSITIONAL TERMS Help to describes things as they relate to one another Describes position and location of patients compliant and/or symptoms
ANATOMICAL POSITION Used to describe the positions and relationships of structures in the human body. Correct position is: * Standing up with your arms at your side * Palms of your hands facing forward * Eyes looking forward * Toes pointing forward
BODY PLANES Sagittal plane – vertical plane that runs lengthwise and divides your body to right and left portions. The portions do not have to be equal and allows us to see a sagittal section view of the inside of the body. Frontal plane – divides the body into front and back portions. Allows us to see frontal view of the inside of the body. Transverse plane – crosswise plane that runs parallel to the ground. Divides the body into upper and lower portions. Allows us to see a transverse section of the inside of the body
MOVEMENTS THAT OCCUR SAGGITAL PLANE= Forward and Backward movement FRONTAL PLANE= Side to side movement TRANSVERSE PLANE= Twisting movement
DIRECTIONAL AND POSITIONAL TERMS Superior Inferior Anterior/ventral Posterior/dorsal Medial Lateral Proximal Distal Superficial Deep Supine Prone
EXAMPLE (ex: incision on R dorsal hand inferior to finger)
EXAMPLE Describe the position this athlete is in & the direction of his injury in regards to basic anatomy
BODY REGIONS Abdominal – Gluteal – buttocks stomach Brachial – arms Cephalic – head Cervical – neck Crural – legs Dorsum – back Pelvic – pelvis Pubic – genital Thoracic – chest Trunk – torso Vertebral - spine
BODY CAVITIES Your body is not a solid structure, it has many open spaces or CAVATIES We divide the body into 4 major cavities: Two dorsal cavities (back) Cranial cavity (brain) Spinal cavity (spinal cord) Two ventral cavities Thoracic (chest) Abdominopelvic (stomach and pelvis)
