QUESTION: Why should medical students participate in research & discovery during medical school? ANSWERS: § The practice of medicine is always advancing, which requires life-long learning from research literature – develops “critical thinking skills” § Contribute to the knowledge base of medicine § Improve competitiveness for top residency programs because many residency programs require research during training
Discovery Program An optional program for medical students to build a portfolio of accomplishment and scholarship in a defined topic areas. Goal: To promote development of expertise in areas of professional interest using a scholarly approach for research & discovery – Expose medical students to research and begin their training as Clinician Scientists – Allow students to perform an extended research project within the medical school curriculum – Improve problem solving and interpretive skills utilizing analytic methods – Increase communication skills – Develop teaching skills
