Dr. Smith and Dr. John are two research scientists within the department of Pediatrics and Neonatology. Currently working on a grant about gene therapy, they are working together to collect data as well as find cures and treatments for a variety of diseases to help the community. Objectives • Obtain hands-on experience and more knowledge about biology • Focus on what career I would like to pursue in the wide range of biology related careers • Participate in research lab work • Learn how to properly create experiments • Gain knowledge on cloning DNA and plasmids • Extract and correctly analyze data Activities • • Cloned DNA by using a Polymerase Chain Reaction Made Agarose gel, loaded DNA and ran a gel electrophoresis Extracted and Purified DNA Performed a recombination assay Grew and plated bacteria on Kanamycin plates Electroporated bacteria for gene entry Digested samples using restriction enzymes Used an autoclave to properly sterilize both dry and wet materials Summary This valuable experience reaffirmed my interest in the medical field and solidified my thoughts about working in research concentrated at the cellular level. Furthermore, this has helped me apply my coursework to a real work environment in order to make effective career choices. I am looking forward to working in a lab in the future and continue to expand my knowledge of molecular biology.
