MEASURES OF CENTER AND VARIATION Mean, Median, Mode & Range

Mean The mean is the average. • Add up all the values to find

Mean The mean is the average. • Add up all the values to find the total • Divide the total by the number of values you added together Example: 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8 2 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 32 There are 7 values. Divide the total by 7 32 ÷ 7 = 4. 57 The mean = 4. 57

Median The median is the middle value • Put all the values in order

Median The median is the middle value • Put all the values in order least to greatest • The median is the middle value • If there are two values in the middle, find the mean of these two Example: 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8 The median = 5

Mode The mode is the most frequent value • Count how many of each

Mode The mode is the most frequent value • Count how many of each value appears • The mode is the value that appears the most • You can have 1 mode, 2 modes or no mode Example: 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8 Mode = 2 and 5

Range The range is the difference between the lowest and highest value • Find

Range The range is the difference between the lowest and highest value • Find the highest and lowest values • Subtract the lowest value from the highest Example: 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 7, 8 8– 2=6 The range = 6

Let’s Practice #1 Find the mean, median, mode & range for the following data

Let’s Practice #1 Find the mean, median, mode & range for the following data set. 23, 10, 4, 8, 19

Let’s Check #1 Mean = 12. 8 Median = 10 Mode = no mode

Let’s Check #1 Mean = 12. 8 Median = 10 Mode = no mode Range = 19

Let’s Practice #2 Find the mean, median, mode & range for the following data

Let’s Practice #2 Find the mean, median, mode & range for the following data set. 15, 2, 36, 45, 22, 2

Let’s Check #2 Mean = 20. 3 Median = 18. 5 Mode = 2

Let’s Check #2 Mean = 20. 3 Median = 18. 5 Mode = 2 Range = 43
