EAST RENFREWSHIRE VOCATIONAL PROGRAMME 2020/2021
BACKGROUND What is East Renfrewshire’s Vocational programme? East Renfrewshire’s Vocational Programme brings various council services together with local employers and colleges of further education, to provide a range of stimulating vocational courses for Senior Phase pupils. The programme currently offers a broader range of options offering you the opportunity to study for a vocational or national qualification together with their other subjects All courses have been developed to recognise the needs of future employers, and in most cases the relevant industry sector has assisted with the development
Benefits of Vocational Courses • Relevant for chosen career path • Practical and may include a work placement • New environment / opportunity to try college experience • Treated as an adult (more responsibility) • Qualifications – Access, SCQF levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, National Progression Awards, Higher, University Level 1.
Our Partners
General Information • How is the programme delivered? • • Courses run during the academic year and will be delivered within the school week. Locations, attendance and duration are given in the appropriate programme page. • You do not attend during in-service days, exams, public holidays and/or school holidays. Transport • Transport will take you to your location and will return you back to school at the end of the afternoon. • If you do not live near the school your parent or carer will need to make arrangements to pick you up at the end of the day if they do not wish you to make your own way home. • There may be some independent travel. How will the courses be certified? • When you receive your certificate from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA), your vocational courses will appear alongside the awards for courses you have completed in school. • When out at college we will monitor your attendance, attitude and performance.
General Information • Most courses run from August to May (Foundation Apprenticeships may be different) • Pupils share any concerns about the course/transport etc. with PT PD. • Regular contact between PT PD and Vocational Co-ordinatorprogress reports/attendance/attitude/performance/ concerns monitored and fed back to Pupil Support staff, Year Heads and Parents.
Foundation Apprenticeships Foundation apprenticeships are a work-based learning opportunity starting in S 5. Pupils spend time out of school at college or with a local employer, and complete the F/A alongside their other subjects. The qualification may be a 1 or 2 year course and is linked to one of six key sectors of the Scottish economy, so young people are getting industry experience which will help them kick-start a successful career in their chosen field. This year we have pupils on: • Social Services Children and Young people • Business Skills • Creative and Digital Media • Mechanical Engineering • Accountancy
Attendance Patterns Vocational qualifications are part of the same structure and covered by the same arrangements as subjects delivered in school: 2. 5 days per week Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday afternoons, Thursday all day • 2 half days Tuesday/Thursday afternoons • Friday morning - Periods 1, 2, 3 If you choose a Tuesday /Thursday course you may also wish to choose a Friday morning option (e. g. Barista, Shoestring Cookery, Pool Lifeguarding). Otherwise these periods are for private study- catch-up, homework, revision •
Applying for a course Who can apply for a place on the Programme? • Pupils who are about to enter 5 th or 6 th year (S 4 are also eligible) • Places are limited; therefore pupils will be nominated and interviewed by their school prior to a place being offered. If courses are oversubscribed or pupils are unsuccessful they will be placed on a “Reserve List” and advised if a place becomes available. • You will discuss with your Pastoral/Pupil Support Teacher the most suitable course • Prior to you starting and once your place has been confirmed your Parent or Carer must complete an online “joining form” • The “joining form” provides permission for you to attend. • Please contact your Pastoral/Pupil Support Teacher for more information.
The Vocational Training Programme booklet can be downloaded from: http: //www. eastrenfrewshire. gov. uk/article/1740/About-our-schools or access it on the school website.

The message from this is … • An ‘A’ pass at National 5 gives a very good chance of passing at Higher. • However that does not necessarily mean an ‘A’ pass at Higher. • A ‘C’ pass at National 5 gives a 50 -50 chance in some subjects but much less in others.
However… These are statistics – Statistics make general statements about general results Each pupil is an individual – An individual can make their own statement
