• Railway is a type of land transport. • In 17 th century wooden rails were in existence.
• In 1801 the first iron railroad was opened and in 1804 Mr. Travithick invented first locomotive.
• In 1825 George Stephenson invented the steam engine. • In the beginning the speed of steam engine was only 15 miles per hours.
• In some countries like China and India where coal is found in abundant quantity coal is used to run railways.
• But in some countries electricity is being used to run railways.
MOST IMPORTANT RAILWAYS OF THE WORLD 1)Trans Siberian Railway • Longest railway line of the world. • Belongs to R. F and covers a distance of about 5400 miles. • Joins the areas of Asiatic Russia with the areas of European Russia.

(2) Canadian Pacific Railway • Second longest railway line of the world. • Joins the areas of Eastern Atlantic Ocean with the areas of Western Coastland on pacific. • Covers the distance about 3500 miles • Begins from Halifax and reaches up to Vancouver western coast of Canada.

(3)Chile Argentina Railway • begins from Buenos-Aires a city Argentina and reaches to Valparaiso a port of Chile via san-Lois-Mendoza. • Covers a distance of about 1500 miles. • Helps both countries in internal trade.

(4) Orient Express Railway • begins from Paris and by passing various countries of Europe it reaches at Istanbul Turkey. • This line passing through Germany, Hungary, Check Republic, Yogoslavia, Bulgaria, reaches Turkey. • Helps in exports and imports of various countries
