Purposes of Icebreakers What’s most important in planning for use of icebreakers is to be clear on the purpose of the activity and be sure your chosen activity aligns with the your objective, the buy-in established from the group and overall group readiness for the vulnerability or silliness required to complete the activity. The primary objectives for an icebreaker follow. 6
Purposes of Icebreakers Learning Names Energizer – get the group energized after a meal, an intense session or a midafternoon break. Build a team – get the group solving problems together, taking on roles and experiencing some stress. The magic is in the debrief of these exercises and games. Also where personality and workstyle assessments move the group forward (eg. Compass Points, Myers-Briggs, True Colors, etc. ) Having fun – It’s good to smile, laugh and dance with your team. Guessing games, competition, prize give-aways and food always lead to smiles and silly memories. Getting to know each other (personally or professionally) – Boundary breaking questions are always a good place to get people connected on deeper levels.
