Meaningful Artbased lesson plan for English Language Arts
Meaningful Art-based lesson plan for English Language Arts grade 1
A great way of intertwining Art and English Language is by creating a Museum or Art gallery inside your classroom! The image above shows Big Ideas, Content, and Curricular Compitency from the English Language Arts 1, BC curriculum that can be covered, in this Art-based unit plan.
Steps to making your classroom into a museum/art gallery: 1. Explore what an art gallery or art museum are: What do they do? Who works there? What does an Art gallery or museum look like? Who goes there? Why do people visit them? 2. Create art, as a way of sharing each person’s unique story. 3. Explore the way museum curators and artist use text to accompany art pieces. Explore different types of text, and displays on museum/gallery use. Inquire on why do artist and curators use writing to accompany art pieces? 4. Have student draft the title, and text that will accompany their own art, in order for it to be displayed. 5. Display student’s art and text around the classroom´s “art gallery”.
Students will begging to think of Art pieces, museums, and artist as living, and dynamic ideas: to be explored, expressed and document: the same way they did by creating, and displaying their own art piece. Perks: It can remain as a short lesson plan, but has the potential to become a cross disciplinary unit plan: using Museum and gallery spaces as a theme to the project.
