Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Objective: Find and interpret mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data.

Median: Median is the middle number of an ordered data set. When there an odd amount of numbers, you cross out the numbers (outside – in ) until you reach the middle number which will be the median. When there an even amount of numbers, you must find the mean of the two middle numbers.

You MUST rewrite the numbers from least to greatest. This is mandatory, if you want your answer to be correct! Example 1: Find the Median of the data set 8, 4, 10, 12, 3. 3, 4, 8, 10, 12 = median: 8 Ex. 2: Find the median of the data set. 11, 12, 6, 2, 4, 8. 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, 12 = 6+8 = 14 ÷ 2 = 7 median = 7

Range: The difference between the biggest number and the smallest number in the group. Example: Find the range of the data set: 40, 33, 35, 36, 27, 50, 38. 50 – 27__ 23 range = 23 Your Example: Find the Range of the set of data: 64, 70, 56, 58, 60, 70.

Mean (or Average)= is the sum of the data divided by the number of pieces of data. Example: Data set: 4, 3, 5, 1, 2 To find the mean: First Add: 4 + 3 + 5 + 1 + 2 = 15 Then divide: 15 ÷ 5 = 3 Your Example: Find the mean of a set of data. Number of songs in your i-pad: 145, 87, 150, 122, 96.

Mode: is the number or numbers that occur (repeat) the most. If no number repeats, then there is no mode. Example 1: Find the mode of the set of data: 18, 20, 18, 22, 11, 19, 18. 18 appears the most, so the mode is 18. Example 2: Find the mode of the data set. 12, 23, 28, 32, 46. Both 28 and 46 appear the most equally so the modes are 28 and 46. Example 3: Find the mode of a set of data: 1, 3, 6, 8, 11, 13. Because no number repeats, there is NO MODE.
