What is a habitat ? • A habitat is the place where living things live. • El lugar donde los seres vivos habitan. • It is more than just a home it includes the whole surrounding area. Es más que solo la casa, incluye toda el area que la rodea. • The habitat provides the animal or plant with food or shelter. Un habitat le da al ser vivo comida y techo.
ANIMALS AND PLANTS • Most plants and animals are specially adapted to survive in a particular habitat. • They have developed special features to suit the demands of their environment. • This is called adaption.
SOME EXAMPLES OF ADAPTION
All birds have similar characteristics. But many water birds have features that are different from those birds live on land. • Some animals are camouflaged This lion blends in well to blend in with their surroundings. with the grassy background. • This keeps them safe as it is more difficult for other animals to see them or catch them for food. SEAL FROG SHARK Aquatic animals have streamlined bodies to move more easliy in the water.
Camels store water in their humps. Snakes glide across the hot sands and can shed their skin These animals have adapted to live in the hot climate of the desert. Ostriches have long eyelashes to keep out the sand.
These animals have adapted to be more suited to cold temperatures. Polar bears are kept warm by their body fat. Deer have a warm layer of fur. Layers of fat keep the seals body warm, and small ears stop heat loss.
Some animals are wild! They cannot be kept at home, and they could be dangerous sometimes.
Some animals are domestic, and humans can teach them how to behave.

ANIMALS HAVE ABILITIES! • All animals have different abilities. To describe an ability, we can use CAN – CAN’T!!!
USE OF CAN We use can to say that an animal – or a human, or a plant is able to do something. For example: BUTTERFLIES CAN FLY. (Las mariposas PUEDEN VOLAR).
OTHER EXAMPLES: • PENGUINS CAN SWIM VERY FAST • A MONKEY CAN CLIMB A TREE. • A DOG CAN BARK
USE OF CAN ‘T / CANNOT We use can’t or CANNOT to say that an animal – or a human, or a plant is NOT able to do something. For example: PENGUINS CAN’T FLY. (Los pingüinos NO PUEDEN volar).
OTHER EXAMPLES: • ELEPHANTS CAN’T JUMP. Los elefantes NO PUEDEN SALTAR • HORSES CAN’T SIT DOWN. • SNAKES CAN’T WALK. LOS CABALLOS NO SE PUEDEN SENTAR LAS SERPIENTES NO PUEDEN CAMINAR.
