" Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart. kerry@philips. com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802. 11 Working Group. May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Introduction • Active Scan

May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Introduction • Active Scan is used to detect APs. – STA uses the information in the Probe Response to select AP to associate or reassosiate to. – If the STA detects multiple APs, it may want to measure some of the APs by receiving more frames from them. • Neighbor Report is used to speed up the STA’s handoff from one BSS to another. – STA uses the information included in the Neighbor Report to select the APs to which it may roam to. – Before performing handoff to a new AP, the STA may want to measure some of the reported APs by receiving more packets from them. • Information about AP’s Measurement Pilot Transmissions would help STA to decide how to measure the AP efficiently and to align the measurement better with the user traffic. May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Fast and efficient scanning

May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Fast and efficient scanning • • • From Neighbor Report or Probe Response the STA does not currently know whether the AP is transmitting Measurement Pilot Frames. STA may have Vo. IP link while it has to detect and scan new APs to roam to. STA may schedule the AP scannings better if knows whether the AP is transmitting Measurement Pilots frames. – APs not transmitting the Measurement Pilot frames shall be scanned by active scan or passive scan. – APs transmitting the Measurement Pilot frames with small Measurement Pilot Interval may be scanned any time e. g. between Vo. IP transmissions. • If the STA estimates the TBTT of the AP from the Probe Response or Neighbor Report information, it may scan AP passively at TBTTs. However, if the AP is transmitting Measurement Pilot frames, the STA would be able to receive “passively” the same amount of scan data much faster and it does have to schedule the transmission at TBTTs only. May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Overview of the normative

May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Overview of the normative text changes to include Measurement Pilot Transmission Information in Probe Response • New Measurement Pilot Transmission Information element is introduced. • The element may be included in the Probe Response. Element ID Octets: 1 Length Measurement Pilot Transmission 2 1 • Measurement Pilot Transmission field is Measurement Pilot Interval as specified in 7. 3. 1. 19, if the AP is transmitting Measurement Pilots. If the AP is not transmitting the Measurement Pilots, the Measurement Pilot Transmission field is set to zeroes. Submission 5 Päivi Ruuska, Nokia

May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Overview of the normative

May 2006 doc. : IEEE 802. 11 -06/0644 r 0 Overview of the normative text changes to include Measurement Pilot Transmission Information in Neighbor Report • • • Optional sub-elements may be added in Neighbor Report element. TSF information is currently such an optional sub-element. New Measurement Pilot Transmission Information sub-element is introduced. The element may be included in the Neighbor Report if the serving AP knows that the reported AP is not transmitting Measurement Pilot frames or that it is transmitting Measurement Pilot frames with the interval known by the serving AP. Sub-element ID Octets: • 1 Length Measurement Pilot Transmission 2 1 Measurement Pilot Transmission field is Measurement Pilot Interval as specified in 7. 3. 1. 19, if the AP is transmitting Measurement Pilots. If the AP is not transmitting the Measurement Pilots, the Measurement Pilot Transmission field is set to zeroes. Submission 6 Päivi Ruuska, Nokia
