What We Know About Teaching ✗ There are multiple factors that affect the educational success of students. ✗ Outside factors can have a positive or negative effect on the educational success of students. ✗ Among school-related factors, teachers are the most important factor. ✗ School leadership does affect student achievement but mostly indirectly. 3

“The best part about being a teacher is that it matters. The hardest part about being a teacher is that it matters every day. ” -Todd Whitaker 4

KEYS Keep the Goal in Mind

KEYS Keep the Goal in Mind

K = Keep the goal in mind ✗ Always have a goal of what

K = Keep the goal in mind ✗ Always have a goal of what you hope to accomplish on a specific day but be willing to alter plans as needed. ✗ Use appropriate resources - the curriculum matters! ✗ Shortcuts to state-created resources: Ex. K 12 ela resources + LDOE Ex. K 12 math resources + LDOE ✗ Plan with your students’ needs in mind! ✗ Do the planning before you put it into a lesson plan! ✗ One way you can do this is to annotate given resources. Ex. Learn. Zillion notes, Eureka teacher lessons, SS Scope and Sequence documents 7

KEYS Energize your Students

KEYS Energize your Students

Energize your students ✗ Cooperative learning - Set up strategies for students to work

Energize your students ✗ Cooperative learning - Set up strategies for students to work together, not just in groups. ✗ Higher-order thinking - Provide question starters to your students as needed. ✗ Warm-ups - Be sure that these serve a purpose. ✗ Review ✗ Extension of previous learning ✗ Application of previous learning ✗ Pre-assessment of day’s objectives ✗ Lesson closure - Quick - 1 -3 minutes 9

KEYS You Set the Tone

KEYS You Set the Tone

You set the tone ✗ Teacher/student relationships are one of the most important factors

You set the tone ✗ Teacher/student relationships are one of the most important factors in student learning ✗ What is the most effective way to minimize disruption? ✗ Keep students engaged! ✗ If a student is misbehaving, find out the root cause. ✗ No power struggles. Don’t let it become personal. ✗ It is my/your responsibility as an educator to teach students how to behave in a school setting. It is also collectively our responsibility. ✗ Quick/easy behavior interventions: pbisworld. com ✗ PBIS ✗ Tangible positive reinforcement (Eagle Bucks, Greyhound Greens, Cardinal Dollars, etc. ) ✗ Mystery motivators ✗ Many others! 11

You set the tone ✗ Relate your classroom expectations to the school’s expectations. ✗

You set the tone ✗ Relate your classroom expectations to the school’s expectations. ✗ Example: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe - How does this look in my classroom and in the places I visit with my students. ✗ Intervene before giving a consequence or sending a student to the office. ✗ Think sheet or other type of reflection activity. ✗ Break the class into manageable chunks ✗ Put sheets on students’ desks. Put a check for any 15 -minute block in which the student followed rules, participated appropriately, etc. ✗ Fair, not equal - Not everyone needs the same thing. Give the students what they need, not what someone else needs. (Steps to door analogy) 12

Student-Centered Question to ponder: ✗ If you have taught a lesson to what you consider to be the best of your ability, and a kid still doesn’t get it, whose fault is that? A. The student B. The teacher C. The principal D. The parent(s)/guardian(s) E. The parish F. The state G. Society as a whole 14

Student-Centered ✗ Answer: “Either I taught them to do it that way, or I

Student-Centered ✗ Answer: “Either I taught them to do it that way, or I am allowing it to happen. ” ✗ So what is a possible solution? ✗ RTI (response to intervention) is responding to individual student needs ✗ RTI is not an extra 30 -minute period in the day OR extra busy work for a teacher or for kids ✗ Picture this… ✗ Now picture this… 15

Student-Centered ✗ How do I do this within a 90 (or 100, or 75,

Student-Centered ✗ How do I do this within a 90 (or 100, or 75, or 50, or 45 minute class period? ) ✗ Keep a constant pulse on what students understand. Formatively assess. Use these results to guide your instruction. ✗ It’s ok if some students don’t get it the first time. Think about whether or not you are going back to this standard/topic again soon. (Eureka Math, Learn. Zillion, etc. ) 16
