Maximising MAPA Developing Programme Delivery Principle Based Problem
Maximising MAPA®: Developing Programme Delivery Principle Based Problem Solving Foundation Level Mike Sumner Global Professional Instructor Vanessa Evans Global Professional Instructor © 2017
Purpose of MAPA® SM Foundation Physical Skills To enhance Certified Instructors’ ability to effectively apply the physical principles of MAPA®. The programme is based on four major disciplines: Philosophy Psychology Physics © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 2
CPI Classroom Models are used: • As a starting point • An ideal standard and intent. • As a simple way to teach and learn principles. Note: CPI Classroom Models are the foundation we use to help learners problem solve the different situations they encounter in the workplace. © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 3
When is it appropriate to teach adaptations to the Classroom Models? • Specific to an individual's risk behaviour. • Consistent with the MAPA® principles and philosophy. • Risk assessed. • Taught and monitored by a MAPA® Foundationsm Certified Instructor. © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 4
Review of Key Principles: Disengagements 1. Position 2. Posture 3. Proximity 4. Biomechanical Benefit (Movement) • Hold & stabilise • Pull/Push • Lever © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 5
Situational Application • Body Holds from the front • Pony tail (Hair holds from behind) © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 6

Position ensure your position is facing the individual and off to the side as much as is reasonabley possible © 2017 Posture Place feet shoulder width apart to ensure balanced and stable and the principles of a "Supportive Stance" are applied Proximity extend proximity away from the individaul to protect cchest area HOLD & STABILISE : This is best achieved by placing both hands on the ball odf trhe shoulders of the individual PULL / PUSH establish the weakest part of the hold (biomachanical benefit) which is where the fingers of the individual meet and use a pull/push movement to pull away from the individaul and retreat to a place of safety Certified Instructor Conference 2017 7

Turn position so in front and to the side of the individual © 2017 Posture Place feet shoulder width apart to ensure balanced and stable and the principles of a "Supportive Stance" are applied Proximity Extend proximity away from the individaul to promt personal safety HOLD & STABILISE : Place a hand above the ponytail for stability and hold the individuals wrist. PULL / PUSH Maintain the stability above the ponytail and use the other hand to apply apull push principles (both your hands move in opposing directions Levers Move towrads the indivudual hip to promote a release using a lever principle Certified Instructor Conference 2017 8

Key Principles: Holding 1. Position 2. Posture 3. Proximity 4. Biomechanical Benefit (Movement) • Outside/Inside • Limit the range of motion © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 10
Situational Application • Attempts to stand up from a seated position (medium level restriction) • Manage an individual in seated position when only 1 or 2 seats are available © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 11
Principle based template (Holding) Principles of Holding Position Posture Proximity Biomehancical benefit (Movement) Outside/Inside Manage Risk of Motion Clients Name: Behaviouiral concern Principle based adaptation The individual is attempting to break free from staff while medium level of restriction is being applied by making attempts to stand up from a seated position and gain an exit Based on the MAPA principles consider two options prior to using a restrictive intervention. 1) let the individual stand staff to disengage and retreat to a place of safety for all. 2) To maintain ALL principles and stand up with the individaul and reassess least restrictive option. Position Remain seated next to the individual off to the side Posture feet shoulder width apart to ensure stability Proximity Remain very closdse to the individual to restrict movement Outside/Inside In a medium level of restriction use the inside arm principle and bring this inside principle up towards to the individuls shoulder (ball of the shoulder). Please ensure the outside principle is maintained at all times. Limit range of Motion The continued use of verbal interactions including limit setting are essential to enable a suitable and timely conclusion. Allow the person to move but resrct the option of the individual to engage there thigh muscles to asend to a standing positon © 2017 Certified Instructor Conference 2017 12
Principle based template (Holding) Principles of Holding Position Posture Proximity Biomehancical benefit (Movement) Outside/Inside Manage Risk of Motion Clients Name: Behaviouiral concern manage an individual when there is no seating facility for staff Principle based adaptation Based on the MAPA principles consider options based on the opt out sequence to consider least resrtictiove options throughout. Position Remain next to the individual off to the side but now decent towards the floor to ensure priniple of remaining at a similar height to the individual Posture Ensure nearest knee to the individual is on the floor and the outside leg- foot on the floor out to the side Proximity Remain very closse to the individual to restrict movement Limit range of Motion The continued use of verbal interactions including limit setting are essential to enable a suitable and timely conclusion.
