Maunder Butterfly Diagram Interpret data e g Butterfly

Maunder Butterfly Diagram Interpret data (e. g. Butterfly Diagram) to describe drift of sunspots, determine solar cycle length, predict year of maximum

The Maunder Butterfly Diagram: shows the latitude of sunspots against time, (but it doesn’t show where on the line of latitude the sunspots occur) o Latitude +90 0 o -90 o Time (years)

The original Maunder Butterfly Diagram, drawn in 1904 by E. W. Maunder

The original Maunder Butterfly Diagram, drawn in 1904 by E. W. Maunder After initially no sunspots, they start to appear in higher mid-latitudes Then they appear in a wider band, ranging from higher latitudes to lower latitudes. Then they appear at still lower latitudes, but no longer at higher latitudes Eventually they are found at lower and lower latitudes (but rarely if ever actually on the equator) Then there are none, until the start of the next solar cycle

Solar Maximum: the period during a solar cycle when there is the maximum activity and the maximum number of sunspots occurring

Sunspot number: the number of sunspots at a particular time. The plots below show sunspot number against time. Solar Maximum: the period during a solar cycle when there is the maximum activity and the maximum number of sunspots occurring
