LIBERALE da Verona , about 1445 - 1527/ Dido's Suicide , early 16 th century Dido , having been abandoned by Aeneas , commits suicide on a pyre composed of his armour and his gifts to her, in her palace in Carthage. The details in this painting do not follow exactly the story as told in Virgil's 'Aeneid' (IV: 504 ff). Some figures come from a Dürer print ('Five Lansquenets and an Oriental on Horseback') which probably dates from the mid-1490 s, and the influence of Mantegna is also evident. This painting was probably a panel from a "cassone ". This is usually accepted as a work by Liberale da Verona.

The Low Ham Roman Mosaic The mosaic was found in 1946 during excavations on an exceptionally large villa at Low Ham, in south east Somerset. Dating to the mid 4 th century AD, it lay in the bath block and formed the approach to the cold plunge bath. The Low Ham mosaic is unique in Roman Britain in that the five panels provide a narrative. In fact it is the earliest piece of narrative art in the country. It depicts the story of Aeneas and Dido as told by the Roman poet . Virgil in The Aeneid, written in the 1 st century B. C

The company stopped on the island of Sicily during the course of their journey. After the first trip, before the Trojans went to Carthage, Achaemenides, one of Odysseus' crew who had been left behind, traveled with them. After visiting Carthage, the Trojans returned to Sicily where they were welcomed by Acestes, king of the region and son of the river Crinisus by a Dardanian woman. Niccolò dell'Abate Aeneas carried to Sicily by a storm. From the cycle of the Aeneid. Fresco, 1540. Galleria Estense, Modena, Italy

The first initial F depicts the marriage of Aeneas with Lavinia, daughter of King Latinus. At the bottom left of the page Rhea Sylvia and Mars, at the right Romulus and Remus with the wolf can be seen.
