MATTER, MATERIALS AND FORCES NACHO ESTEBAN ROMERO
DEFINITIONS ØWHAT IS MATTER? Matter is everything that we can see, smell and touch. It can be natural or man-made. It has got two properties mass and volume. ØWhat is mass? It is the amount of matter in an object. We use scales to meassure it. The common unit of mass are grams, kilogrammes. ØWhat is volume? It is space an object occupies. It it meassure with graduated cylinders in milillitres. Ø What is density? It is meassure how much matter there is in a specific volume. Ø What are forces? Forces are actions that can change on object’s movement or shape.
STATES OF MATTER Solids have got a fixed shape. Liquids haven’t got a fixed shape. They take the shape of the container they are in. They cannot be compressed. Gases haven’t got a fixed shape and they fill all the available space around them
MATERIALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES ØWhat are materials? A material is the different type of matter which forms an object. We can find different materials in nature as for example water, iron, salt, cotton, gases… PROPERTIES Hardness Transparency Elasticity Flexibility Fragility
MATERIALS AND THEIR USES We use different types of matter according to its specific properties. The matter can be natural or man-made as we told before. Common materials Wood Plastic Metals Fibres Glass
FORCES Types of forces Contact forces Is created when two objects touch, such as when we push or pull a door Action-at-a distance forces Is when an object changes its movement or shape, even though it wasn’t touched. Magnetism Is a natural force that can attrack or repel metal objects. Gravity is a force that exist between all objects with mass.
