Matter ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS, AND MIXTURES
Matter – A Review § Matter is anything that has mass (can be weighed) and volume (takes up space). § Matter is made up of atoms § atoms are the building blocks for all matter § atoms form different elements § elements form molecules § Matter can be classified as either a pure substance or a mixture
Matter – Pure Substances A pure substance: §is made up of one type of particle §has its own unique physical and chemical properties §composition never varies § examples: oxygen (O 2), water (H 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO 2)
Matter – Pure Substances: Elements An element: §consists of only one kind of atom §can exist as either atoms or molecules §cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical or physical means §examples: oxygen (O 2), helium (He), gold (Au)
Matter – Pure Substances: Compounds A compound: §is made of different elements held by chemical bonds §has elements in a specific ratio that is always the same §has its own unique physical and chemical properties §can only be separated by chemical means, not physically § examples: salt (Na. Cl), water (H 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO 2)
Matter – Mixtures A mixture: §is made from different pure substances (elements, compounds, or both) that are not chemically joined §is held together by physical forces, not chemical §can be separated physically (filtration, evaporation, distillation) § examples: ocean water, air, soil, vegetable soup
