+ Elements Simplest form of a pure substance Cannot be physically or chemically broken down into anything else (One atom)
+ Compounds Union of two or more elements CAN be broken down chemically (not physically) Has a chemical formula
+ Mixtures Substances that are combined together physically but NOT chemically! There are homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures
+ Homogenous A mixture that appears to be the same throughout It is “well mixed” The particles are very small and not recognizable
+ Heterogeneous Not evenly mixed Particles can be seen
+ Different types of mixtures… n Solutions: when a substance is dissolved in another n Colloids: particles are mixed together but not dissolved n Alloy: mixture of metals n Suspension: mixture of particles that will eventually settle
