Mats Berlin Planters Guide a webbased decision support
Mats Berlin Planter’s Guide - a web-based decision support tool for improved Scots pine forest reproductive material (FRM) in Sweden & Finland Background and overview
• • • FRM are largely genetically improved in Sweden and Finland Improved FRM originates from seed orchards Seed orchards have different levels of genetic gain Seed orchards are adapted to different combinations of temperature and light. Climate change affects performance and deployment zones Decision support tools are needed! Seed zones Scots pine TSUM 2050 TSUM ”today” Increase in per hectare production Seedlings from Swedish seed orchards Norway spruce Scots pine Million seedlings • Improved FRM background and usage
Project objectives Taking climate change into account by using tailored climate variables and scenario data. Including climate data and developing new transfer effect models. Implement in new/modern web tools. From separate national to Regional joint models and deployment platforms. • • Step 1: New Swedish ”Planter’s guide”. (Scots pine) Step 2: Joint Swedish-Finnish ”Planter’s guide” (Scots pine) Step 3: Nordic/Baltic ”Planter’s guide” (Norway spruce)
Scots pine models and deployment platform for Sweden and Finland Field and climate data compilation/preparation Collaboration with climate researchers is key: SMHI/FMI Development of models, valid for both countries Planned projects: - Same modeling effort for Norway spruce - Including effects of abiotic & biotic risks - Sensitivity analysis (climate variability) Development of trans-national deployment platform Coordinating SO-charateristics and including national rules/legislation Collaboration with stakeholders is key: National forestry boards, Plant producers, Forest owners, … etc
The Planter’s guide tool https: //www. skogforsk. se/english/products-and-events/software/planters-guide---pine/ • • 9/9/2020 Released 2019 -09 -17 A Swedish and Finnish version (operational) An English version (for demonstration purposes) Openly available 5
Select a climate scenario and adjust for local climatic conditions Performance of seed orchards is given relative to Local stand performance is given aslocal a reference. stands (growth/index). 120 = 20% better Relative value 100 (growth/index) Easy to select site – Click in the map Seed orchards are shown and ranked according to predicted areal production over a rotation – growth and survival are shown separately
Deployment maps • • • 9. 9. 2020 Maps have been developed to present the deployment zone for each SO. A color scale is introduced, showing the relative performance index compared to a natural stand PI = 120 means 20% better areal production over a rotation than an unimproved stand seed 7
