Lesson 1 – The Sphere I do (teacher): Find an object in your house that is shaped like a sphere. Say “This is a sphere. I know it is a sphere because it has 1 curved surface and there are no corners. This object is an orange and it is a sphere shape. ” We do (teacher and child together): Together find an object in the house that is shaped like a sphere. Confirm the object is a sphere by checking. “Does it have 1 curved surface? Does it have any corners? ” You do (child): Can you find an object in the house that is shaped like a sphere? When the child returns ask them “Can you prove to me it is a sphere? Explain how you know? ” Encourage the child to show you as they count the surface.

Lesson 2 – The Cylinder I do (teacher): Find an object in your house that is shaped like a cylinder. Say “This is a cylinder. I know it is a cylinder because it has 1 curved surface and 2 flat circle/circular faces. ” We do (teacher and child together): Together find an object in the house that is shaped like a cylinder. Confirm the object is a cylinder by checking “Does it have 1 curved surface? Does it have 2 flat circle/circular faces? ” You do (child): Can you find an object in the house that is shaped like a cylinder? When the child returns ask them “Can you prove to me it is a cylinder? Explain how you know? ” Encourage the child to show you as they count surfaces and faces.

Lesson 3 – The Cube I do (teacher): Find an object in your house that is shaped like a cube. Say “This is a cube. I know it is a cube because it has 6 equal square faces. ” (Count them as you say this) We do (teacher and child together): Together find an object in the house that is shaped like a cube. Confirm the object is a cube by checking. “Does it have 6 equal square faces? ” You do (child): Can you find an object in the house that is shaped like a cube? When the child returns ask them “Can you prove to me it is a cube? Explain how you know? ” Encourage the child to show you as they count the faces.

B A cuboid can also have 2 square faces and 4 rectangle faces. Please see video for both. We do (teacher and child together): Together find an object in the house that is shaped like a cuboid. Confirm the object is a cuboid by checking. “Does it have 4 or 6 rectangle faces? You do (child): Can you find an object in the house that is shaped like a cuboid? When the child returns ask them “Can you prove to me it is a cuboid? Explain how you know? ” Encourage the child to show you as they count the faces.
