Maths – Time - Monday This week in maths we will be looking at time. Today, we will start with the largest unit of time which is in everyday use, the year.

Our calendar uses the year 0 as the possible date of when Jesus was

Our calendar uses the year 0 as the possible date of when Jesus was born, although most historians think it was a little later than that. So BC is before Christ and AD, stands for Anno Domini (Italian for the year of our lord). These days you will also see BCE and CE (Before common era and common era). So, all other years are in relation to the year zero.

A few key events (Some of which actually happened) • • • 1180 BC

A few key events (Some of which actually happened) • • • 1180 BC Trojan Horse (1180 years before year zero) 753 BC Rome built (753 years before year zero) 121 BC Miss Crowson born (honestly-she’s immortal) 31 BC Mr Carrington starts growing his beard (approx) 43 AD Roman invasion of Britain (43 years after zero) 1066 Battle of Hastings (1066 years after zero) 1666 Great Fire of London 1721 The last time Mr Bowen washed his socks 1825 Mrs Matthews ordered her first wig 1925 Mrs Hill was grown in a lab by Albert Einstein 1974 The world changes for ever as a small, rather ugly, child is born!

Your Monday Task: • 121 BC Miss Crowson born (honestly-she’s immortal) Today is all

Your Monday Task: • 121 BC Miss Crowson born (honestly-she’s immortal) Today is all about girl power. Miss Crowson was born 2142 years ago. Can you find out all the queens of England Great Britain that she has seen. Find out what years they were on the throne and how long they reigned for. You could put them onto a time line and work out how many years between their reigns. Some of our greatest monarchs have indisputably been female, makes you wonder why we don’t let them run everything (although maybe not Miss Crowson!). Enjoy your research and learning about years.
