What are the maths skills? • Appendix B in both the GCSE Physics and GCSE Science (double award) specifications. • The skills are exactly the same in both specifications for Physics. • Those skills in bold type are HIGHER Tier only.
Significant figures Use an appropriate number of significant figures - HT only Will not be asked on the practical exam papers because they are untiered. Summer 2019: DA Unit 6 HT Q 2(b)(i)
Rearranging equations Change the subject of an equation – HT only. On FT if candidates are referred to page 2 equation will be in correct format for them to use. Format of equations on page 2 never changes. If a rearranged version is required it will be given in the question.
Equation of a straight line Understand that y = mx + c represents a linear relationship – HT only. Summer 2019: Unit 1 HT Q 7(b)(iii)
Tangents Draw and use the slope of a tangent to a curve as a measure of rate of change – HT only. Summer 2018: DA Unit 6 HT Q 4(b)
Area Understand the physical significance of area between a curve and the xaxis and measure it by counting squares as appropriate – HT only. Could apply to calculating the distance travelled on a velocity-time graph or the work done in stretching on a force-extension graph.
Area Summer 2018: Physics 2 HT Q 7(b)(i)
Standard form Summer 2017: Physics 1 HT Q 7(b)(iii)
Standard form Summer 2018: Physics 1 FT Q 8(b)(i) &(iii) / HT Q 1(b)(i)&(iii)
