Maths Measurement Year One Maths | Year 1 | Measurement | Measure and Record Capacity and Volume | Lesson 2 of 2: Litres and Millilitres
Litres and Millilitres
Aim • I can measure capacity using standard units. Success Criteria • I can measure capacity. • I can use the words ‘litre’ and ‘millilitre’.
Order It – Capacity Sort these containers into order from the most empty to the most full.
Capacity is a measure of how much something can hold. Usually, we use capacity to talk about liquid. What equipment can we use to hold and measure liquid? When something holds as much liquid as it can, we say it is at full capacity.
Capacity What words do we use to describe how much water is in the bottle?
Capacity If we want to find out exactly how much water is in the bottle, we have to measure it. When we measure, we use units so we can compare measurements and talk about them with other people. We measure capacity in millilitres (ml) and litres (l).
Capacity A litre is a lot of liquid. These containers hold litres of liquid. This bottle holds 1 litre.
Capacity A millilitre is a small amount of liquid. These containers hold millilitres of liquid. This spoon holds 5 ml.
How Many? How many litres of water does this bucket have in it? This bucket contains 5 litres of water.
How Many? How many litres of water does this beaker have in it? This beaker contains 100 millilitres of water.
How Many? How many litres of water does this jug have in it? This jug contains 2 litres of water.
How Many? How many litres of water does this bottle have in it? This bottle contains 4 litres of water.
How Many? How many litres of water does this jug have in it? This jug contains 50 millilitres of water.
Capacity Does a bucket hold litres or millilitres?
