Mathematics Wednesday 25 th March Weight and Mass Before we continue our learning about weight and mass, can you complete these part whole models?
Today we are going to use non-standard units to weigh and compare the mass of objects. Introduction Non-standard units are used by children in Year 1 to introduce young children to the concept of measuring without having to read scales, which is a skill in itself. The idea of non-standard measure is to focus the child on the concept of heavier, lighter, longer, shorter, etc before they move onto the next step of measuring using grams, kilograms, centimetres etc.
• To find out how much something weighs using our non-standard unit, we need to make the scales balance. • In this example the banana weighs the same as 7 cubes (non-standard unit). • If you have made some balancing scales (see Monday’s powerpoint) you might like to have a go at weighing different household objects using non standard measures such as identical lego bricks. • Record in your green book: Object Bricks banana 7 Can you say which of your objects was the heaviest/lightest? How do you know?
Work through today’s questions writing the answers in your green book.
Can you solve today’s problem? • How many cubes does the teddy bear weigh? • Explain how you know.
