Math Placement Level Comparisons Summary Board Presentation November 11, 2008 1
Elementary Math Placement Levels Last year, there were 3992 elementary students who were not taught on grade level GPS. Beginning this school year, all students are being taught at or above grade level. A greater number of students within cohorts qualify for advanced and/or accelerated classes when compared with their prior year performance. This is especially true for students moving from grade 3 to 4 and from grade 4 to 5. Almost 4, 000 students participated in advanced or accelerated math classes during the 2007 -08 school year. This year, 7, 230 students are participating in advanced or accelerated math classes which is an increase of over 55 percent. Based upon performance, students can continue to be placed in higher levels throughout the school year at regular intervals as outlined in the system’s continuous achievement plan adopted by the Board in May 2008. 2
