Cell References In Excel, we often use a cell’s address in calculations rather than the value in that cell. This allows us to fill common calculations without duplicating the effort It also allows for changes in the cell’s value to automatically update in the calculation References can be made either relatively or absolute When you want the cell’s address to update to match the row and column you are filling to, you use relative references When you want the cell reference to stay the same, you use absolute Created by Courtney Dunlap- Ragsdale High School. Cell References Relative Cell References Adjust to match the pattern set by filling a formula in a column or row When filled, row numbers adjust to match Created by Courtney Dunlap- Ragsdale High School. Teachers at Work BB&T Absolute Cell References Does not adjust when filled into a row or column $ used to indicate absolute position The $ keeps the cell reference the same, even when filled
Formulas are used to make calculations in Excel All formulas start with the = sign They must include either cell references or values and at least one math operator (+, -, *, /) Example Starts with the = sign B 6 is a relative cell reference * is used to indicate multiplication 3 is a value Created by Courtney Dunlap- Ragsdale High School. Functions are used to make calculations in excel They start with the = sign Use a key word to perform the calculations, rather than a math operator (+, -, *, /) Sum and Average are most popular Access the full list by clicking on the “Insert Function” button Created by Courtney Dunlap- Ragsdale High School. 3 -D Formulas 3 -D formulas are used to calculate totals and averages for information that tracked over multiple worksheets in the same workbook. For example, you might have the same monthly expenses and want to calculate their total for the year. Created by Courtney Dunlap- Ragsdale High School. Teachers at Work BB&T
